Acne, oily and spot-prone skin

Acne is common in adults as well as teenagers. It happens when pores become blocked with oil and dead skin and then inflamed. Treatment works best when it is consistent, so we start with a plan you can follow at home, then add clinic treatments where they help.

What you may notice

  • Oily skin and enlarged-looking pores
  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Red, inflamed spots
  • Dark or red marks left after spots heal
  • Scarring

When medical treatment is needed

Deep, painful lumps, acne that is leaving scars, or acne that is affecting your mood needs medical treatment. Dr Andy can assess whether prescription treatment is appropriate, or advise you to see your GP or a dermatologist. If acne starts suddenly in adulthood alongside irregular periods or extra hair growth, see your GP.

What the evidence shows

Reviews support chemical peels for mild to moderate acne. The common peels work about as well as each other, though most trials are small. Microneedling has its best evidence for acne scars. Read more in our articles below.

Where to start

A skincare plan comes first. Your skin is prepared at home for two to four weeks before a first peel, which reduces the risk of side effects. Scarring is treated once spots are under control.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop moisturising oily skin?

No. Oily skin still needs a moisturiser, chosen to be light and not to block pores. Stripping oil can leave skin irritated.

How long before I see a change?

Acne treatments usually take 8 to 12 weeks to show their full effect, so it is worth giving a plan time to work.

Can I have a peel if I have taken acne tablets?

We do not peel skin within six months of acne tablets prescribed by a doctor. Tell us about any acne treatment at your consultation.
